Mining Operating Cost Inflation: Energy, Consumables, and the AISC Squeeze Through 2025
Operating-cost pressure across mining's major input categories has pushed gold-sector AISC well above $1,700 per ounce in some regions, with cash cost per tonne treated up sharply since 2021. The report maps the inflation signal by input, commodity, and cost-curve position.
Mining operating costs have compounded since 2021, with cash cost per tonne of ore treated up roughly a quarter through 2024. Diesel and electricity together make up 20 to 40% of site operating cost depending on mine type, and for open-pit operators each move in crude oil feeds directly into all-in sustaining cost. Reagent markets tightened further in late 2025 after a force majeure at a dominant sodium-cyanide producer, and sulphur prices roughly doubled amid supply disruption. Grade decline compounds the input story: average mined copper grades have fallen and strip ratios have risen, lifting the amount of material moved per unit of metal. The report separates structural from cyclical cost pressure and identifies the cost-curve positions facing the greatest margin erosion.
